Notice of Cancellation:
2020 Summer Enrichment Camp

April 22, 2020

Dear Summer Camp Families,

It is with much regret and sadness that Piedmont Health Services and Sickle Cell Agency (PHSSCA) must cancel our 2020 Sickle Cell Summer Enrichment Camp. With the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Board of Directors of Camp Carefree, the site where our camp is held, has decided not to host any camps this year. PHSSCA’s Board of Directors, our Executive Director, Kathy Norcott, and I, Monica Summers, Camp Director, respect their decision. The health of our campers, counselors, medical and support staff is our ultimate priority. There is currently no vaccine and no treatment for COVID-19, and we cannot risk any of our campers or staff being exposed.

For 36 years, PHSSCA has provided a summer enrichment camp for children living with sickle cell disease. This summer session would have been our 37th camp! Our camp is designed to encourage self-confidence and independence, improve social skills, and to foster peer relationships.

We understand some previous campers will be upset about our decision to close this year. However, the safety of our campers comes first. Campers that would have aged out this year will be able to come back next year for a wonderful camping experience! If you have already submitted a completed camp application, you will have a spot reserved for next year. However, an updated medical form will be required.

We will plan for a bigger and better camp for 2021! Please continue to follow the CDC COVID-19 recommended guidelines to help decrease the spread of the virus and practice social distancing.

Respectfully submitted,

Monica Summers, MPH
Camp Director
